State Bank of India (SBI) in the Maldives will work with UNDP Maldives to create a Marine Laboratory in partnership with Naifaru Juvenile. During the opening ceremony of the first SBI branch in Hulhumale’, SBI made a donation of MVR 161278 to the Make My Island platform. The official donation was handed to UNDP Resident Representative, Ms Shoko Noda by State Bank of India CEO in Maldives, Mr. C. Shankarnarayanan and CGM of SBI Mr. ujit Kumar Varma.
The donation will be used to further expand the ongoing marine projects by Naifaru Juveile by opening of a new Marine Laboratory in the Lhaviyani Naifaru, which will provide a professional, clean and stable room for injured turtles along with proper state of the art equipment for minor surgeries and be ease of access for larger turtles. The organization already houses different marine species in their nursery and provide rehabilitation services for abandoned & injured sea turtles.
Naifaru based non-governmental organization (NGO) ‘Naifaru Juvenile’ runs many community-based programmes such as teaching, turtle rehabilitation, sports, marine conservation and many others.
Atoll Marine Centre is a part of the locally run NGO called Naifaru Juvenile. The centre specializes in turtle rehabilitation of both poached turtles and injured turtles. The centre also has other projects running which involve coral gardening, coral reef monitoring and Nature Club with the school children on Naifaru. UNDP Maldives has previously supported the organization through various programs under its banner.
The Marine Laboratory is set to be open in 2018.
